ABOUT
Hans Bilger

TWO FIELDS SOUND is the professional audio business of Berlin-based engineer, producer, and musician Hans Bilger.

Sound in a room creates two acoustic fields: one direct, and one reverberant. Great recordings capture a lovely balance of the two. Bilger also blends two fields: In addition to his genre-spanning work as a recording engineer, music producer, and double bassist, he holds a doctorate in evolutionary bioacoustics from one of the top biology programs in the US, where he published papers on the musicality of birdsong and the evolution of the voice box. Bilger brings his deep and varied knowledge of sound to every recording project. For him, audio productions are where acoustics, perception, and aesthetic intuition meet.

Bilger began his training as a sound engineer at Yale University's Fred Plaut Recording Studio, where he assisted in recording professional symphonies, chamber music, big bands, and jazz combos. Since then, he's recorded everything from orchestras to indie bands; traditional Romanian songs to electroacoustic flute music. Recently, he has worked on the production teams for recordings on leading European jazz label ECM (Kit Downes, Trickster Orchestra) and for renowned jazz bassist Doug Weiss. Alexander Dubovoy's recent solo piano album 恋愛至上主義 - Love Supremacism, which Bilger engineered, was featured on Apple Music's Best New Songs. Bilger prizes naturalism, balance and depth in all his recordings.

Bilger also has wide experience as an instrumentalist, composer, and producer. He is currently the composer-in-residence at Cora Dance (USA) and has released original albums on Good Child Music and Adhyâropa Records. A fluent sight-reader and classically trained double bassist (he's studied with members of the Staatskapelle Berlin and Ornette Coleman's band), his sharp ears and musical literacy aid him as a producer of recordings based around notated music and complex scores.

In addition to his solo work, Bilger has built up several successful collaborations to realize larger recording projects. Greenhoe & Bilger, his primary production partnership, with New York City-based composer/arranger Eli Greenhoe, has notched several successful location recordings of chamber orchestras, songwriters, and jazz performers in America. In Germany, Bilger has ongoing collaborative relationships with Martin Ruch, Guy Sternberg, Dirk Fischer, and Brian Trahan, all established producer/engineers whose work runs the gamut from traditional orchestral and rock band recording to cutting-edge improvisation and film scoring.

Finally, Bilger also has extensive experience in audio post-production for media. He has previously worked as an engineer at Panoply Media in New York City and is available to mix podcasts, commercials, and film/TV soundtracks.
